Wind damage can be caused by a hurricane, tornado, or windstorm. Most policies cover wind damage but have conditions and limitations.

Hurricane Damage FL

You must mitigate your damages following a loss caused by wind. This may include tarping your roof if it is leaking, drying any water that has entered the home, and securing any broken windows or doors. It is advisable to take pictures of the damage prior to mitigating or repairing the damage.

Only perform those repairs that are absolutely necessary until such time as the insurance company has had an opportunity to inspect the damages.

Many policies state that water damage to the interior of the home is not covered unless the water entered through a hole or opening caused by wind. Some insurance companies interpret this language to mean there must be a hole in the roof big enough to allow light to pass through in order for there to be coverage for interior water damage.

The fact of the matter is water can enter through the tiniest of holes or openings, and most holes or openings cannot be located with precision because they are too small or hidden. If you notice your roof leaking during or immediately after a particular wind event, it is likely wind contributed to causing the leak.
